Retirement Myths Successful People Still Believe

By Pam Horowitz  Published On September 14, 2026

One of the most surprising themes I see when working with financially successful clients is that even people who have planned well, saved consistently, and built strong financial foundations still carry outdated assumptions about retirement.

By Scott McManus

These myths aren’t careless—they’re inherited from earlier generations or shaped by rules of thumb that simply don’t match the way people live today.

The first myth is that retirement has a specific, universal age. In reality, clients retire earlier, later, or in phases—based on lifestyle, health, fulfillment, or opportunity. Retirement is no longer a finish line; it’s a transition into a new kind of life.

Another myth is that spending naturally drops in retirement. For many people, the opposite is true. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that spending often stays the same—or increases—during early retirement, especially in leisure and travel categories.1 Today’s retirees are more active, more mobile, and more interested in meaningful experiences than previous generations.

A third myth is that Social Security will cover most retirement needs. In truth, it typically replaces only a portion of income, and higher earners receive lower percentage replacement rates.2 For many clients, this realization reframes retirement as a strategy-dependent chapter—not one that happens automatically.

The final myth is that retirement is primarily a financial event. In reality, it’s emotional. Identity shifts. Structure disappears. Purpose evolves. The most successful retirees are the ones who prepare for both sides.

To help clients rethink retirement, I often ask:

• What do you want your days—not just your years—to look like?

• What gives you energy or connection?
• What lifestyle do you want to maintain or create?

• How do you define meaning in this next chapter?

Retirement is personal. The best plans are the ones shaped by curiosity, awareness, and honest reflection—not old assumptions. When outdated expectations fall away, retirement becomes far more flexible, creative, and fulfilling. It becomes something you design, not something that happens to you.
