STARTING EARLY
Scott McManus was in his late teens living with his grandparents in San Luis Obispo, California, when his grandfather passed away. His grandmother had little understanding of the investments left to her by her husband, so she turned to Scott, only a high school senior at the time, for advice. He embraced the challenge first completing her hand-written tax returns, then studying everything possible related to the financial industry. Scott witnessed first-hand how well the investments performed over time compared to simple bank savings, so he urged his grandmother to hold her investments and wisely spend her cash. Those investments, he recalls, provided for her through her lifetime. Upon graduation, Scott became a successful Laguna Beach, California-based carpenter, but the recession of the 1980s limited his work, and he enrolled in college. His working understanding of finances led him to becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), but he was more excited by the front-end work of building wealth than accounting for it after it was spent, so he transitioned to financial advising.
The investments I had made for my grandmother, and the financial security it provided her, sparked my interest to learn more about investments and investing. After that, I decided I wanted to help others the same way.

The critical lesson is that we have unlimited wants, but limited resources for purchasing them,” he says. It’s a philosophy John carried with him through his studies and work. He learned early that if people wanted to get somewhere including him there was a cost to it, and that cost was either time, money or discipline. “I wanted it to be my job to help others realize those costs and understand how they could be paid back for them,” he explains.
THE ROLE OF THE WIND
It was the wind that blew Scott and his family to the Central Coast in the late 1980s. An avid wind surfer, a passion he shares with his son, John, Scott was searching for a place where they could live and surf. Cayucos, with its brilliant blue waters and happy, adventurous people, was just the spot. Today, deeply invested in California’s Central Coast, Scott and John are growing Cayucos Wealth. They spend time together riding the waves of the Pacific Ocean. And they work every day to be as successful as Scott was all those years ago for his grandmother for the people in the community they call home.
